Acid Erosion

Have you ever said, “My teeth are soft, my teeth are translucent, or my teeth are VERY sensitive?”  If yes, then you might be dealing with acid erosion.

Acid erosion is when your tooth enamel is being worn away from the acid in our foods like: wine, fruit, sodas, and even vegetables.

Here are some signs of acid erosion:

1) Transparency

2) Discoloration

3) Rounded teeth

4) Cracks

5) Sensitivity

Usually, our saliva helps neutralize the acid found in our food by restoring the PH balance and remineralizing the enamel of our teeth. But due to the acidity of modern diets, our saliva isn’t always enough to restore the PH balance needed to remineralize the enamel.

We at Montgomery Dentistry recommend the following activities to help the process of reminieralization and prevention of acid erosion:

1) Use Sensodyne toothpaste ProNamel

2) Drink acidic drinks through a straw to avoid contact with your teeth

3) Maintain your regular dental checkups

4) Avoid brushing immediately after eating acidic foods. That is when you enamel is the softest. Wait about an hour then brush.

Spring is near and that means time for all the wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables.  Keep in mind some of our tips to help combat acid erosion.

Happy Spring from your friends at Montgomery Dentistry!

Our Patients Know We Care

“I would be happy to recommend Montgomery Dentistry to anyone. The office staff is cheerful and obliging. I am grateful to have found such caring dental group. After the death of my longtime dentist, I thought it would be hard to adjust to a new group. This group is just fantastic. I certainly appreciate the ease with which they enabled me to transfer.”
