Oral Health and Diabetes

Did you know that gum disease and diabetes are related?

Your overall oral health is affected by so much more than watching your candy intake or remembering to floss…albeit great habits!

Seemingly unrelated issues and symptoms – such as elevated blood sugar levels – actually hold the potential for playing a damaging role in the health of your teeth and gums.

A person suffering from diabetes has a weakened ability to fight and ward off infections.  And infections love to claim territory in a person’s gums, becoming known as a condition called gingivitis.  Gums that are already weakened by a heavy presence of plaque are even more susceptible to developing gingivitis.

This makes regular dental check-ups imperative for those suffering from diabetes.

Diabetics are also at risk for experiencing further uncomfortable oral issues such as dry mouth, burning mouth syndrome, and fungal infections.  All of these conditions can be detected early, however, by maintaining regular dental check-ups and a plan for healthy diet and exercise can also work wonders for a diabetic’s oral health.

Here at Montgomery Dentistry, we take the whole you into consideration.  Our job goes way beyond cleaning our patients’ teeth twice a year…rather, we consider a patient’s entire medical history and work to improve their overall quality of life.  Starting with a dental exam.  🙂
