Composite Fillings

White composite fillings offer a wonderful option for dental restorations. Your dental hygienist will carefully match the filling to the color of your teeth and use it repair decay, cracks, or fractures in your teeth.

For composite fillings to be applied, the affected area of the tooth must be removed and then filled with the composite material. It’s often used for teeth that are more visible in your smile as it provides a close match to the color of existing teeth.

As with all restorations, the fillings are not promised to last forever and may someday need to be repaired or replaced. The material is known to be extremely durable, however, and is expected to last many, many years.

How are composite fillings placed?

One appointment is usually the time required to place composite filling. The dentist will first numb the area for treatment and then begin to remove decay from the tooth. A thorough cleaning of the infected area will then commence as the areas is prepared for filling.

It should be noted that a special medication will be administered to any nerves near the decay for greater comfort and protection.

Once the filling is placed, it is common to experience heightened tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, but this will soon subside as the tooth adapts to the new filling.

Once in place, the composite filling will restore the treated area back to a healthy appearance.

Patients often experience sensitivity to hot and cold around the area with the new filling, but this is only temporary and will pass once your tooth adjusts to the recent changes. We will be sure to provide you with guidance and tips on how to care for your white composite filling at the end of the procedure.
