Crowns (Caps)

When other types of restoration will not work, porcelains crowns (caps) give patients an outstanding option for dental restoration.  The original tooth is covered by an encasing known as a crown, which will appear like a beautiful, healthy tooth.

We at Montgomery Dentistry love the use of porcelain crowns as they offer the best match for the original enamel.  Crowns are also known to be remarkably long-lasting and will normally endure wear and tear for several years.  Great usage and wear, however, may eventually lead to a replacement being needed.

Why our patients ask for porcelain crowns:

  • Cosmetic appearance
  • Safety for cracked or broken teeth
  • Protecting root canals
  • Advanced tooth decay

What work is involved with crown placement?

Crown placement typically requires two appointments for completion.

The first appointment involves taking molds of the area needing treatment. A temporary crown will be provided for use until the new porcelain crown is fabricated in our dental lab, usually taking about two weeks time.

During this appointment, your dentist will numb your tooth for the removal of decay before creating your mold. A dentist will then use temporary cement for placing a temporary crown over the tooth’s surface.

At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the original tooth will be thoroughly cleansed. Your dentist will then place the new, permanent crown and be careful to inspect for aesthetic spacing and bite alignment.

We want your porcelain crown to last a long time and will be sure to teach you how to care for your new restoration! We will also encourage you to continue regular check-ups for professional crown maintenance.
